Miracles or Magic?
Erasing the Lines that Divide Us and Inviting Miraculous Magical Experiences
Magic can be defined as, “the power of apparently influencing the course of events by using mysterious or supernatural forces.” (Oxford Dictionary)
Miracles are defined as, “a surprising and welcome event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore considered to be the work of a divine agency.” (also Oxford Dictionary)
When we think of a miracle, we think of something that happens on its own, without any interference on our part, while we think of magic as something we somehow conjure up. However, if we think about some of the so-called miracles that Jesus performed, the events would not have transpired the way they did without his interaction or intention. The miracles, therefore, could be defined as magic, given the definition Oxford supplies.
When I use my words and intentions to shift something in my life, am I performing magic, or am I facilitating a miracle? It seems the lines between the two are elusive, except in the context of our predisposed beliefs.
Many who are programmed in Judeo-Christian thought, seem to have an aversion to the use of magic. It is thought to be the work of the devil or his consorts, whereas, if we would use prayer of some kind, the same result would be thought of as a miracle.
It seems in the Bible, the use of magic or sorcery is forbidden, but miracles are attributed to God. How is one to tell the difference?
Every day that we draw breath into our lungs is a miraculous event. Where does breath come from? Where does consciousness come from? Who is the person who looks out from inside my eyes? How do I have my own thoughts, my own emotions, and my own individual experiences that are different from someone else who is existing in the same time and space as I am?
As a spiritual communicator and healer, I consider it a miracle every time I have a session with a client and they leave feeling better than they did when they walked in. When I am able to provide them with insight and information about themselves, their life, or their loved ones, both living and deceased, when I don’t know anything about them, how is that not a miracle?
This time of year, we are entering into a new experience of a new chapter of existence. Life repeats over and over in cycles of time and space. Every morning is a miracle, when the sun begins its journey across the sky, only to drop beneath the horizon every evening. Spring comes, and the days begin to get longer and the temperature warmer. We still have many cold days, and some warm days, here in Virginia where I live. But something in nature knows there has been a shift, without any input on our part. Some of the plants and flowers begin to peek out of the soil. Tiny buds can be seen sprouting on the trees and bushes. After a long and extremely cold winter, if we had not experienced this over and over throughout our lifetime, we may think that warmer, longer days would never arrive!
In religious circles, we are approaching the time of year when it is thought that Jesus had both his worst day and his greatest accomplishment. His death and resurrection are an important theme this time of year, curiously coinciding with the springtime, at least in our part of the world, for centuries. We will talk more of this in my monthly energy report for April, coming up soon.
One of the occasional questions I get asked as a psychic, medium, and spiritual healer, is, am I ever afraid that I am incurring the wrath of God for doing what I do? In some circles, my work is considered evil. The very idea of anything that is not embraced by religious texts is suspect. Magic is taboo, but miracles are acceptable, and even welcome and desired.
If I am a Christian and I lay my hands on someone to offer healing from Jesus or the Holy Spirit, and that person recovers, the recovery is considered miraculous and welcome, but if I extend my hands towards the same person and declare that I am doing Reiki or some other energy healing modality, and that same person recovers in the same way, is the recovery any less miraculous?
Jesus declared that the kingdom of God resides within us. To me, that means that I am an aspect of the Divine living inside a human body. If we realize that the soul that lives inside of us is just an individuated aspect of the Source of All, we would realize that that Divine essence can create a shift in our everyday life experience. Is that magic or is that miraculous? Do we have to be a member of a certain established organization for that Divine aspect to be acceptable?
Maybe we should consider the possibility that it doesn’t matter!
So many people are feeling anxious over the state of the world. There are so many things happening in our world which could have the potential for creating a disaster of monumental proportions. But there are also many wonderful things occurring as well! As we access the Light of our souls and reside in a state of consciousness that is aligned with joy and peace and well-being and healing, we can coexist with other people who are depressed, distressed, and fearful. It is almost as if we live in a completely different reality than those people. But this is a choice that we must make daily. It is a state of mind. It is a higher awareness that we can access through the decision to walk and live our lives in a state of bliss.
I was watching an interview with a fairly well-known movie and television personality who came to fame when she was ten years old, and is now in her forties. The person interviewing her asked her if she had ever experienced any of the trauma and sexual harassment that so many others actors had reported. Other than some attention she had experienced on certain aspects of her physical features, she happily reported that she had never been assaulted, abused, or treated with anything other than respect, and was shocked to learn of the allegations, since many of the incidents occurred at movie and television sets she herself was also physically present at. When asked what her thoughts were about why she was spared, she had no other explanation, other than to say she always expected the best of everyone she worked with, and considered her life an exciting adventure. She also had a mother who was always present with her, protecting her, and supporting her dreams. Her mother instilled in her a strong sense of self, and therefore she did not ever feel unsafe or vulnerable. It appeared she had created a sort of magical bubble around herself. She lived every moment in gratitude for her good fortune, and so, because of her mindset, had magically created a simultaneous experience in an alternate universe than some of her contemporaries.
I believe we can create magical lives that are free from the drama and trauma that so many experience, simply by believing it is possible and always thinking and expecting the best in any given situation. What we focus on grows. I am not saying that tragedy does not sometimes strike us unexpectedly, or that this attitude always works, without exception. Sometimes we do everything right, and bad things still happen. But I would rather live my life believing in the miraculous than not believing in it. I could insert here multiple stories of events and experiences I shifted using my words and intentions, as well as stories of my clients, with whom I have shared this principle over the years. Given my past as a card-carrying, Bible-thumping, born-again Christian, some of the stories could be considered miracles, and some magic, but both occurred using similar principles and rituals. You can read all about that here.
I have come to believe that some of the stories in the Bible about Jesus and other Biblical figures contain references to rituals that brought about a specific result, which is what one does when doing magic. I maintain that it is all the same!
If we keep our intention honorable, and set intentions and do rituals that are going to bring about a positive result and harm none, then release our expectations for a specific outcome, except that is the highest and best for everyone concerned, then I believe that it doesn’t matter whether we call it prayer, or magic, or whatever.
In my particular branch of Christianity, we took the proclamation by Jesus when he said that we could speak to a mountain and make it move, literally. We understood that we were representatives of Jesus, and could do the same feats he did. We stood in our power and mountains moved. My dad often shifted the course of hurricanes during the time he lived in Florida. He could speak and it would stop raining, and speak again and it would rain. I have manifested jobs, rid my house of ants and other pests, and once cleared a house of a particular spirit so well that the tenants moved out the very next day, an unintentional outcome, I admit. One time I took a group to the local park and cleared it so significantly that within days, a sting operation rid the area of a male prostitution ring.
After I departed the church, however, I seemed to have lost a sense of that connection to Divine power. I stopped proclaiming change. Despite all of the evidence I had that it worked, I threw it all out for years. I started studying different beliefs, and it seemed the teachings about our own inner power were omitted or thought to be disrespectful or unethical. And I forgot. I forgot that I could speak to storms and it would stop raining. I forgot I could rid my house of pests, although now, I have a different approach, which maybe I will cover in another post.
Essentially, I forgot my own inner Light. I still worked with Spirit, but it was more of a partnership with my Guides, and the spirits of nature. I started requesting instead of proclaiming, which, depending on the circumstance, is more respectful of the spirits I was previously unaware of. The results were similar, but something was missing.
It is now my understanding that there needs to be a happy medium. Yes, we are Divine beings living out a human existence. We can stand in our power and command certain situations to change, and they will. There are times when it won’t work, and those times we have to accept that the outcome is going to be what it is going to be. It is important to release our need for specific outcomes, and instead, proclaim the highest and best outcome for everyone concerned.
When I send healing energy to a little boy going through cancer treatment, I telepathically go to his hospital room and tell him, “CHOOSE LIFE.” I psychically channel a healing frequency into his body. As I understand that he is also a Divine being having a human experience, how his soul chooses to experience life is completely up to him.
It is time for us to remember ourselves as Divine beings having a human experience. How we affect change in our lives and the lives of others is subject to the understanding of how we view who we are, how miracles or magic happen, what we have agreed to experience as souls in this lifetime, and the degree to which we are affecting or being affected by the collective consciousness.
It is time for us to stand in our power, raise our personal frequency to that of Divine Love and Joy, and assist our fellow humans in raising their consciousness also. We cannot do this by engaging in fear, anger and victimhood consciousness. Posting angry posts on social media about people in political power are not the answer, and will only lower your own personal frequency.
I have chosen not to engage in posting political statements, not because I do not have an opinion, but because it is not my job. I honor those who are addressing important issues publicly. They are on the front lines, fighting those battles, hopefully in the attitude of love, but obviously, not always. I have to stop following even some of my fellow healers when they use their voice to spread hate.
Let us choose to engage in the political conversation with the attitude of love. Let us love the souls of those we disagree with. Let us shine the Light of our souls and recognize that no matter what is happening in the world, we can coexist in a realm of consciousness where all is love. The government is not our source of well-being, of financial security, or of our own understanding of who we are as a soul. Let us see one another as another member of the One Mind, perhaps wearing a different earth suit who expresses themselves and their understanding of themselves differently. We are all living out our lives as a member of the human race, and we are one mind. The attitudes and emotions of the majority of the living souls is the mentality that will prevail in our collective experience of the world, but ultimately, we can experience bliss despite what is happening in the world around us.
Let us proclaim the frequency of love in our conversations and in our daily lives. Let us recognize that abundance is who we are as a soul, not something that the government can take away from us. We are abundantly loved, abundantly supported, and abundantly provided for, to the degree we recognize that the power within us and connected to Source energy is working in our lives and creating the life we imagine.
Yes, sometimes bad things will happen. Sometimes there is nothing we can do to change it. But I would rather die believing that I am responsible for my own well-being than to die believing myself to be a victim to powers outside of myself.
Miracles and magic happen every day, if we can open our hearts to receive, recognize and experience them. Let us not demonize those who experience miracles but call it magic, or experience magic and call it miracles. We are all one.
Thank you for entertaining my perspective as you are discovering who you are as a soul living in a human body! I love and appreciate each one of you, including those who see things differently. We are all experiencing life based on our current level of awareness. Together, we create a collective consciousness that hopefully considers all perspectives, and ultimately chooses love.
I invite you to express your support by doing all the things - liking, sharing, commenting. Let us spread the message that we are all one and we are not victims, we are not evil if we call what we do something different, as long as the result is the highest and best for everyone concerned. Blessings to you as you navigate your understanding of yourself, your place in the world, and your journey as a soul.
Joy,
I read all your blogs and find them instructive, interesting and sometimes provocative, which is good!
I felt compelled to share my thoughts about this topic: Miracles or Magic?
It is common knowledge that Magic predates Christianity.
The early Christians, during the formation of this new religion, tried to find what would be somewhat familiar to the new converts.
Therefore, the development or honing into one’s psychic abilities and its results were called a miracle.
However, throughout the centuries, the Church defined,in their own terms, what was considered a miracle or magic.
Miracle was from God, and it could only happen if you belonged to the Church. Magic and Witchcraft were attributed to the ones not belonging to the Church.
I read this sometime ago, do not remember who wrote it so I will paraphrase it:
“If a witch wears a cross and builds a church in her lifetime, she’s a saintly miracle worker, but if she does not wear a cross and is of another faith, she’s a witch “.
